The TREP$ Marketplace should become an annual event that the entire school population looks forward to attending.  The younger kids love coming to shop and see what the big kids have created!  The older kids become role models; the younger kids can’t wait until it’s their turn.  Kids who have graduated come back to enjoy the fun too.   Parents marvel at the innovative products and the energy in the room.  If the Marketplace is a big success, it is usually thanks to a determined Publicity Coordinator!

As the Publicity Coordinator…

  • Your main goal is to make sure that everyone in the community learns about and wants to attend your school’s Marketplace.  You really want to pack the house with the entire school community- kids and their parents, cousins, etc.
  • In doing this, you will will also inform the community about the great work your school is doing.

The Publicity Coordinator Guidebook has all the details for you to do a great job bringing in a crowd to the Marketplace, but here is a brief introduction…

Press Releases are attached to this email.  Customize and send them out! There is one to let the community know about the program, one for letting everyone know in advance about the Marketplace, and one to report about the Marketplace after the fact.

Social Media is a great way to spread information for free.  We have created an event on our facebook page for your TREP$ Marketplace. You should have received an email with the link.  Remember to use facebook, twitter, etc.  to keep your school community aware of what is happening!

Flyers and Lawn signs are great for reminding people about the Marketplace.  Life is busy and even though you learned the date once, doesn’t mean you’re going to remember to attend.  Passing the lawn sign in the morning, or seeing the reminder on the town marquee will do the job!  Lawn signs do cost a bit, but most schools adjust the date and reuse them year after year.   (Virtual Backpack flyer at the very least.)

If possible, utilize the centralized email/text service that your school uses for snow-days, etc.

Invite the students to come.  It’s great to get a few participants to speak in front of others at the school.  This is often done during lunch- They tell about the Marketplace and what they plan to sell.

Posting the ads that the kids create the fourth week in a bulletin board in the hallway or in the cafeteria is a great way to publicize the Marketplace and get the kids excited to attend.  Be sure to post them at a height that works for the students.  Sometimes a single row of ads at a 3′ height is what’s best.

Street Banners  Some schools have even purchased large banners to hang across the street!  These banners can include the name of a local business sponsor who pays for the banner.  Couldn’t hurt to ask!
