Meet Smruti

August 05, 2019

My name is Smruti, founder of “Rings & Things.”  I’m in 6th grade at Maywood Avenue School. I had a lot of fun at the first annual TREP$ Marketplace in my school, selling marbled decorative dishes. I got the idea of making marbled decorative dishes from the plain, old, and boring jewelry dish that always sat on my mom’s dresser.

I knew how to make it in solid colors since I had tried my hands on making diyas for Diwali. But, I also knew that making marbled dishes would be challenging since the technique and method would be different and difficult. I started to practice making samples in different color combinations before I made the final product. The second challenge I faced was packing the dishes individually. In order to cut down the cost, I managed to get foam sheets on clearance and made bags out of them at home.

On the day of the TREP$ Marketplace, I was nervous and excited at the same time. The response was impressive. I sold most of the dishes and a few customers placed customized orders in their choice of color combinations. Many complimented and appreciated my work, and said the dishes looked professionally made and perfect. They also suggested to sell the dishes online on Amazon and Etsy. I will be donating 20% of my profit to Atmiya Care Charities, Global Humanitarian Non-Profit Charitable Organization managed by Yogi Divine Society of New Jersey. I had a thrilling experience which gave me a whole lot of confidence to do better and better. I’m so ready to come back with another amazing and unique product next year again!

Smruti participated in the TREP$ entrepreneurship education program as after-school enrichment,  right at school. This extracurricular activity is a PBL (project based learning) experience that helps kids gain an entrepreneurial mindset, financial literacy and life skills to prepare them for and improve their futures.
